It was very slow in the beginning and I had a hard time getting into it, once I did it was still slow moving. It was an interesting look into the Vietnam War, a love story it was not.
I decided to read this book because it was book of the month for January. I was worried I wouldn't like it because I didn't know much on the vietnam war, but that wasn't the case. It was awesome, so glad I went out of my book norm and read this.
The author paints a very clear and often beautiful picture of Vietnam during the 1970 's. Not so much a political book or a book about the war, it is a story of photojournalists, which gives a unique perspective. I really enjoyed it.
A terrific novel in numerous ways: she absolutely “ catches” the enormity and conundrum of war in the person as well as in the political arena; the complexity of relationships are authentically portrayed related to such situations where one is stripped, exposed and opened simultaneously on fertile ground for unique camaraderie and love. Her vividness of descriptions jumped from the pages igniting the smells, tastes, sounds and sweat. Having had a similar opportunity, reading this book was like “yes! “yes! “yes!
I really did enjoy the adventure of this book, the world of photo journalism and the always tragic story of the Vietnam War.
