A River Runs Though It is about fly fishing in Montana, but beneath the surface run currents of philosophic and religious notions as well as a complex study of family relationships and responsibilities. It tells how two sons of a Presbyterian minister maintain their relationship through a common love of fly-fishing, despite increasing personal differences.
It is a beautifully written book.
See the movie directed and narrated by Robert Redford and stars Brad Pitt. The movie does a good job capturing Maclean's elegant reserve.
Although the action takes place over just a few days, this beautifully written novella (just over 100 pages) offers thought-provoking insights into the lives and relationships of a family in 1930's Montana. You might enjoy viewing the movie, directed by Robert Redford, for an interesting interpretation.
