I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy. It borders on teen fiction but is easily an adult read as well.
The book was a good read. It was developed enough to keep our interest for the rest of the series. We thought the plot was well planned and understood. "A little confusing to put together everyone's age, but overall a really fun, romantic (but clean) book. I'm excited to read the next one."
Yelena is "rescued" from execution when she is given the opportunity to be the food taster for the Commander. Which of course, means, that if someone attempts to poison the Commander, she's poisoned first. She decides the trade off is worth it and enters life in the castle. She works under Valek, the second in command, who teaches her the skills she needs to detect poisons.
Life in the castle isn't as simple as just that. Her escape from execution didn't please a few key people - and Yelena has to be constantly on guard.
I found this book very interesting on a political standpoint, as well as entertaining. Discovering Yelena's past and following her journey was entertaining and addicting.
