This is a beautifully written and an utterly engrossing book - the music literally comes alive and the characters stay with you for days. The tension between the divine and the carnal, the role of women, and how people in power utililize that power, set within the context of Indian classical music, provide universal themes for a very constructive discussion for any book group. A must read and very highly recommended.

I started reading this book on vacation while on the beach, and ended up with a serious case of sunburn because I simply couldn't put it down. Beautifully written book. The descriptions are so vivid that one seems transported to the time and place of the book. Divine Music also provided for excellent discussion in our book club, with its themes not limited to the role of women in a social and cultural context, behaviour of people with authority/power, and classical music.
