I found the characters either very likable or very unlikable, good vs. evil. I would love to meet some of the characters in real life, they were that vivid and interesting to me. There are a couple of shocking scenes that you don't see coming - violent, but important to the story.

This is a fabulous story of good versus evil, a story of love and compassion, brokeness and healing, and a man that stays true to his Father regardless of circumstance. You will fall in love with the characters, adults and children alike. They are so well developed that you feel as though you know them, they become a part of you and steal your heart. This first time author, has done an amazing job of breathing life into this family and their story. You will laugh at the quick wit of Swan and most definately cry at the heart wrenching abuse that is inflicted on a child and animals. I loved this novel and cannot wait to read Ms. Jenny Wingfields future work.

Did not like that animals and children were abused. Could have added drama without horror.

Not many books can make you laugh out loud AND cry, but this is one of those books. The descriptions of the Lake children at play are wonderful and the antics of Aunt Bernice are part of the fun, but the child abuse suffered by young Blade will make you weep. The ending will have you holding your breath. Our book club enjoyed this selection very much and would definitely recommend it to others.
