"Not MHC at her best!" by MyTatteredPages (see profile) 10/29/07

I love Mary Higgins Clark. She is one of my favorite authors. Her books are usually page-turners and they captivate you from beginning to end. However, this was not one of her best story lines. It is about two twin girls who get kidnapped and the kidnappers want a ransom that the parents cannot afford. The ransom gets paid but only one twin gets returned. Everyone is led to believe that the missing twin is dead. However, the mom notices the "surviving" twin acting peculiar. She is speaking to her other sister through "twin talk." So the mom has to convince people that her other daughter is alive and it's a race against time to find the missing twin who is very ill.
The idea of twins being able to feel each other's pain and read each other's thoughts is fascinating. And it has been used by other authors with success. I think the problem with this book was that the girls had just turned three and actually seemed to be behaving a lot older. It just wasn't believable. It seemed to be too contrived. MHC should try it again with teenagers or maybe adult sisters.

This is a good mystery although not real suspenseful. Never felt connected to the characters and the telepathy between the twins seemed a little far fetched. The plot was interesting though and it is a very fast read.
