This is a book that many have probably seen the movie of with Julie Harris. There is a newer movie also, that I hear is very bad, but the original movie was good, and followed the book closely. The book is not a page-turner. I was not particularly taken with it, but it does have some interesting characters, and the psychological elements made for very interesting discussion at our meeting. It was kind of fun for October to read a "haunting" book, but if you're looking for really scary, this is not the book. It is an easy read, and quite short.
This book was interesting, but not my cup of tea...although Shirley Jackson was a good writer, she is too depressing for my likes. Her endings are too tragic for me.

I read this book with my online book club and none of us felt it was scary. The writing was stilted and not very believable.
