"A thought-provoking and discussion-inspiring read that underscores cultural differences." by rkarpinecz (see profile) 05/05/08

An unwillingness to understand differences and an unwilligness to compromise result in tragedy for all. On reflection, the major characters are more alike than they realize. Each suffers from deception, pride, and bigotry. Those flaws collide to create a destructive force with horrifying consequences for everyone in its path.

Interesting companion reads might be The Faith Club, Three Cups of Tea, and Reading Lolita in Tehren.

Did not care for this book. The characters annoyed me. The story dragged on...no closure. Blah. Glad I didn't spend money on it.

IT WAS WELL OVER 400 PAGES THAT COULD HAVE BEEN WRITTEN IN 150. Too much character description for such a poor ending.

I did not like this book but it did provoke a lot of discussion at our book club meeting. I do think it is a good book for discussion but in my group people either loved it or hated it.

"Slow and steady is the only way" by trish8794 (see profile) 05/23/10

The only reason I even made it through this one is because I wanted to be able to discuss it at book club. In my normal reading I would have put it down after about page 10. It's slow, dark, gloomy, difficult, and not something I will ever read again.
