An amazing love story during the1950's Korean War. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and was surprised to learn the importance of the families need to produce male heirs. The book centers on a family with only one female child and the life changing events necessary to fulfill the fathers need to have a boy child in order for him "to get into heaven".

This book is very eye-opening to the Korean culture. The author put bits of her own life experiences within the book making it very personable. Our book club enjoyed discussing this book and the vast difference of various cultures.
