Our entire book club enjoyed this book. Doreen's wit and the fast pace of her writing was thoroughly enjoyed by our group. The book had us laughing out loud. It is billed as a "travelogue" but it is so much more. Doreen shares the transformation of everyone in the bus, including her delightful four-footed friends during their year journey.
How lucky was I to have chosen this book for our first ever meeting. I was the host. The book is a party into itself. Her martini recipes are fabulous and of course we all wore our tiaras while sipping them.
Proved for a good degree of discussion and fun. Just what we needed!
I couldn't give it the "one of my favorite book club books" only because this is our FIRST book club book. But I think it just might wind up being one of our favorites. We'll have to let you know.
Our group loved this book, and not just because of the martini recipes. It was laugh-out-loud funny, but also so touching, as we were taken along for this transformational ride. And, best of all, you can contact Doreen through her website and she'll call into your discussion by speakerphone. What a treat!
Saw this book at Borders (it was one of their book club picks). I was skeptical - no interest in RVs, but the review, "Eat, Pray, Love - without the depression" intrigued me. Turned out to be one of our favorites and as a bonus, the author called in, answered our questions and provided even more laughs. So glad we chose this one.
We just started our book club, and what a great pick right out of the box! A book we all loved and a memorable discussion with the Queen herself, who called into our group.
Although this was our first club meeting, I've been in other book clubs, so I feel I CAN rate this as "one of my favorites". You won't be sorry going along for this ride!
Our group loved this book. We all have dreams, and it really got us discussing what those might be. None of ours included an RV, but we got to share and look at why we haven't done them yet. Food for thought and tons of laughs with this one, washing it all down with delicious martinis.
One of the few books we all finished and one of the only ones several of us said made us wet our pants. It's hysterical, but also good for discussion, because it makes you think about the author, her husband, and even their pets' transformations and what we can all learn from them.
Our group loved discussing this book and had a great time reciting our favorite, funny lines. This is a perfect pick if you've just read something heavy, or for a fun holiday/summer read. The author's website is fantastic and a great adjunct, as it has pictures and videos of the trip.
Discussion on the importance of living your dreams, what ours are and what doing this would take. Very warm, funny and insightful book that makes you think about your own life.
Not much to add to what the other clubs said. We obviously enjoyed this one. We particularly appreciated the author's making fun of everything and everyone - especially herself, but she somehow manages to do it without being mean-spirited. We're all also in love with her husband. Great discussion as others have said about priorities in life, not letting fears get in the way of pursuing dreams. Also got us thinking about how to get the spark back and challenging ourselves, especially as we get more settled in life. This one can be read just for fun, or deeper meaning.
Great read for anybody!! Whether your a traveler or a homebody, this book is either interesting because you've been to these places and can understand what Doreen is experiencing or could entice you to see these destinations for oneself.
I liked it a lot. After reading the book, I now know I absoulutely have to visit Alaska.
Our club loved this book. Not only did we find the book very entertaining but it also brought up stories from our own lives that had us laughing all night! This is not a difficult book to read, it keeps your attention, and it nicely slips in some important life lessons. We highly recommend it.
Our group thoroughly enjoyed this hilarious travelogue written by Doreen Orion. From the moment "Project Nerd" convinced the "princess" to live on that willful bus for a year until the return from the wilds of Alaska the book was a delightful blend of comedy and romance. The group enjoyed every moment of the tour.
It was a good read. A quick read. Not what I expected from the description of it though....When the description said that they "give everything up" I was thinking they were going to be actually giving everything up and living in a redone VW bus or something....not a redone TOUR BUS pack with all ammeneties!! They seemed to travel like they had unlimited funds as well....The book did have it's funny moments and I do think the author grew as a person by the end....
I was disappointed when I realized that the main characters weren't REALLY leaving their lives behind to live on a bus while traveling the states. The characters had what seemed like an endless cash flow, living on a luxury coach! How would this be difficult? The had their pets, their clothes, all their "priceless" shoes, TV, dishwasher - the list goes on and on...
I searched and searched for this book, because I was excited to hear about people learning to love life in a more simple fashion... Leaving the hustle and bustle of their professional lives, and their home behind while traveling the US, learning about life and one another.
I did have moments where I found myself smiling and giggling, but overall I was very disappointed with the book. It's not a horrible story, just not what I was expecting. At all.
Maybe, I have nobody to blame besides myself. Next book, I'll need to read more excerpts...
This was one of the few books we all finished. Most of us loved it, a few just liked it alot, but I’m giving it 5 stars because the discussion was one of our best. What would it be like to quit our jobs, leave our homes, most of our possessions, our friends and family and everything that was familiar, just like the author and her husband did? Some of us would never do it, but it was still interesting to discuss why, why not, where and how. We also really liked the transformation of all the characters by the end, even the pets, and discussed how whatever a dream year for us would be, might change us. It all made for a wonderful, thoughtful and fun book club evening. One of our favorite book club picks.
I bought this book thinking that it would be an insightful look into the idea of free, spontaneous living. Instead, it is an inches-deep tale centered around the spoiled author and her complaints. Am I the only one who can't STAND it when women call themselves princesses? Are there any other females who cringe at the attitude of entitlement and selfishness that comes with this life-view? I came away from this book feeling angry that an opportunity like this had been wasted on the wrong person. Save your money if you're looking for any revelations.
It seems that so many transformational memoirs revolve around some tragedy - abuse, divorce, drugs, death, etc. We loved this one because it was a nice change from all that, but we still got to see the author and her husband's growth. Most of all, we absolutely LOVED their relationship. Being able to get inside what is obviously a wonderful marriage - bewteen twoshrinks no less - was a treat and made for a great discussion.
Found the writer to be very annoying, stooping to uncouth. Everything in the first 160+ pages is obvious or trivial and overblown; the writer guilds the lily in almost each sentence, being unable to pass up any obvious quip. Somewhere around visiting Savannah, the writer drops the jock behavior, but manages to find her way back without much effort. Overall, found the book to be without substance. Such a book would be more understandable if written by an uneducated trophy wife, age about 25. This drivel coming from a highly educated woman is the more disturbing given that she is a psychiatrist (which, hello, she points out on a regular basis, over and over, several times in one short chapter - you get the point of this attempted parody); one would think that the diploma and license on Ms. Orion's wall should give her enough security in that fact but it obviously doesn't.
Funny, easy read. But, not my favorite by any means.
My book club enjoyed the story but I personally found the author very irritating.
I liked this book. I didn't think it was one of the best books I'd ever read, but I did enjoy the humor.
A perfect book club selection. We found so many topics to discuss...travel, adventure, marriage, pets, neuroses, by far one of the few books that truly had something for everyone with our diverse group. Besides a great book club selection, I just loved the book!
The pictures you will get in your head while reading this book are priceless! If you want a good laugh, go pick it up and read it with your book group- the author will even call into your book group to say hello!
This was a great book for a book club - we had a terrific discussion about the places she visited and what we would do with a year off. Our book club members have lived all over the country, including several places in Alaska, and we found all of her writing to represent the places true and honestly. We loved her sense of humor! Ms. Orion also sent us personalized book plates for our books and called into our meeting for about 30 minutes - we loved it! Overall, this was one of the best books we have picked all year.
We loved the cocktails....It was fun to follow the travels of Doreen and her husband around the US. Light and fun. A good choice if you club reads a lot of heavy books.
All but one of us loved this book and that one, well she's the first to admit she doesn't have a good sense of humor. She also admitted that our discussion was one of our best, and did agree with the 5 stars.
Absolutely hilarious and wonderfully written. Doreen Orion is a gifted writer who will make you LOL! Travel across the USA with her family and enjoy her wittiness, martini recipes, husband-isms, and adventures ... or is that mis-adventures?
Dang Tracy that was a good book, thank you for the quick read....
Looking for something besides your typical tear-jerking memoir? The only tears you'll cry from reading this book are from laughing so hard! Doreen has a indearing way of poking fun of herself and still maintains her position as"The Queen of the Road"!
These type of self serving books give Americans a bad name.
Our book club really enjoyed this book. The author has a wonderful sense of humor and kept us entertained throughout the book. We also gained some knowledge and an appreciation for our country. Another plus was a phone call to our group from Doreen herself. She is delightful to speak to and was able to give us some more insight into life on the road.
This is the only book everyone in our club has ever finished. We all loved it. I'm even going to recommend it to my other book clubs. We found out too late that the author will call in, so will definitely have her do that next time. A fun, inspiring read that gave us a lot to talk about.
I found this book funny because the author's husband has so many similarities to mine. I didn't realize what a 'project nerd' he was. It was light-hearted and showed how a person can really change when they give something a chance.
Our group had a great time reading and discussing this book! And it was enhanced by the opportunity to talk to the author and get all our burning questions answered about life on and after the bus! Many of us have traveled quite a bit with our spouses, but never in 340 square feet for a whole year and we were quite impressed that Tim and Doreen's marriage survived and thrived as a result! In some form or fashion, our entire group could relate to some aspect of their adventure - whether we were married to our own Project Nerd or would love to be contemplating a similar "leave it all behind" experience and it made for a great discussion! We are looking forward to the next big adventure from Doreen and Tim!
Not a very challenging read, but fun and entertaining.
This book was funny. I liked her a lot but it got a little slow towards the middle. THe begginning was great, I was laughing out loud. I thought it was interesting that someone would do that for an entire year and it brought up some good discussion with the questions at the end which is why I would recommend it.
We loved this book, especially the author's distinct voice. Plenty to discuss especially themes of material stuff vs. experiences.
This was an entertaining read. It was humorous and informative and somewhat insightful about how we can change of view of things when they are experienced through different eyes.
Fun read with insight into our potential for change. Great idea on the cocktail recipes!
The book was a quick read and had funny moments. Author gave historical info about locations they visited. Overall, book was superficial. I expected more depth from a psychiatrist.
I read of this book while traveling with my husband to and from an out of state family wedding reception. We had taken a plane to & from, stayed with family members, slept with the grand dog, attended an outdoor wedding recepton in 95 degree heat with baby carp fish in mason jars on the tables. It was a great read during that time and I would recommend it to all.
A life very well lived on the road with good humor and lessons learned. At heart, a real portrait of relationships - with the road, with technology, with pets, with culture and community and most importantly within a couple whose partners are very well matched in every way.
While cross country in a converted bus is not where I'm going these days, I enjoyed being vicariously along for their journey.
And having the Queen of the Road herself on the phone for the club gathering made a great time even better.
Queen of the Road is a fun yet thought provoking book. How many of us would be willing to "take a year off" to travel the country? How would we cope with the drastic change in lifestyle?
A great summer read!
Our club loved this book. Great discussion on living your best life, craziest thing we ever did because of the nudist rv park they went to,leading to a very fun, bonding time. Most wonderful club, ever.
That's alol I can say. It was boring from the very beginning and the3 character was not likeable. I didn't care about her trip.
When I heard my husband, who read this book first, practically rolling on the floor laughing, I knew this was a must read. I was not disappointed. Not only is it hilarious, but to watch the relationship between Tim and Doreen grow, was just wonderful.
Our author launches this journey originally in support of her husband's dream to simplify, but ends up embracing a new kind of life and abandoning her formerly materialistic sense of reality. Book was well written and full of humor and simple but poignant revelations. A great club read especially if there are restless souls amongst you that wish they could chuck it all and do the simple life. Green Acres for the well heeled.
A great Book Group read.
Not only do you get to armchair travel the U.S.; the story is addictive, couldn't wait to see where they would end up next. The author's personality transforms by the end of the trip having survived an accute fear of riding in a bus, nature, and even a restaurant robbery while they were eating dinner!
Mix a few martinis(recipes in the book) while discussing this highly witty summer read.
This is one you can read just for fun and laughs, or deeper meaning. Our club had a great time discussing on both levels.
Our group loved this one and we had a great discussion. Especially good book to get to know everyone well, too.
This was a great book to discuss, as we all have our dreams, but would we give up everything to do them? Also fun to talk about the most outrageous things we'd be willing to do for our spouses, although for none of us was it a nudist RV park!
I'm in 3 book clubs and will be recommending this to my other ones. It is a delight, as is getting a call from the author.
A nice book about making a big change in you life to go out and find yourself.
I read the book while on a camping vaction and loved it. I was laughing out-loud and now I think my husband might read it just to see what I liked so much.
I admire the guts it took to pack it all in for a year and travel. I would love to have the opportunity to do it too. Doreen's writing style is easy to read and her humor is wonderful as she is able to make fun of herself.
I enjoyed the transformation of Doreen during her adventure. Also, I could relate easily to her perspective of her husbands talents. This book helped me be more open to the personality differences and similarities that my husband and I share/don't share. It is important to recognize the "good" in eachother even if we don't understand the motivation or relavance of the others actions.
Fun to read - laughed out loud in many parts. Loved getting to learn about the many areas the author visited - and I hate history. Thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the author. Have fun with this one!
Our book club had a great time reading this book. It's very funny and a quick read. We really enjoyed those martini recipes! We contacted the author to see if she could call during our meeting time. She promptly wrote back and said that she couldn't make it. However, she did send signed book plates for each person. We were thrilled!
Our club loved discussing this book. It's the kind of book you can read just for fun and laughs, or you can take a deeper meaning from. We enjoyed talking about how the author changed and how we might like to. Great selection!
A wonderful, fun read about changing your life. You learn a lot about this country too. Even yourself. Enjoyed discussion.
Fun, and funny book...great discussion book.
Queen of the Road by Doreen Orion kept me in stitches for the entire trip. Getting into the skin of a forty-something woman with a great sense of humor would lighten anyone's day. Queen of the Road offered some spiritual meat also as the cross country bus trip explores the marriage and growth of two psychologists who are polar opposites, a project nerd who helps people at all costs to himself and a Long Island Princess who helps insurance companies while working out of her bedroom and perfecting her shopping abilities.
Doreen's husband is calm, quiet (if not behind the wheel of a bus) and sneaky. The way he tricked Doreen into the first date by pretending to have a group event with a hunky friend was hilarious and set the tone for the entire story. I enjoyed the frequent effects of Doreen's choice to take physics for non-majors, such as when she tried to manually shut the bus door (at 60 mph) that repeatedly flew open on the highway.
Despite the unusual setting, so many situations were so true to life and helped me find the humor in my own life. I also occasionally get insulted by my GPS and feel it is way too bossy, and get upset when my husband listens to her instead of to me. I have most certainly ignored my dog sitting on a forbidden chair because I feel guilty about leaving her. I have had many of the same project nerd observations when my husband has chosen to fix something himself that I think should be fixed instead with a check to someone who knows what they are doing. I love the 2 strikes and you’re a dimwit rule, since we all need the chance to screw everything up once.
As the bus rolls down the highway barely squeaking under passes, bus-phobic Doreen learns to trust others, especially those who measure the bridge clearance. The camaraderie of dog lovers and campers shines through this saga, showing how indoor isolation with your possessions may not be the true path to happiness. Throughout the trip, it becomes clear that project nerd's way of always looking to be helpful may not just reflect low self-esteem; it may be what makes you a better person. It also seems possible that togetherness in close quarters may actually help marriage.
Another bonus: Doreen joined our book club, and proved she was as witty off the page as on it. It was a fantastic discussion.
Our book club was looking for a light/entertaining read for the summer. Instead, we got a poorly written book with no real substance. It doesn't help that the main character gives a poor reflection of women by coming off as difficult and whiney.
A great book for the beach or vacation. Creatively written (drink recipe starts every chapter)and Orion has a great sense of humor. Also gives you information on tourist (and not so tourist) sites around the US.
A fun story that all members of the club enjoyed. The information about the places they stopped was interesting and several members would like to go to some of them.!
Her "Princess" approach had me laughing out loud! Several others felt she could be a little annoying after a while, but I loved the whole book.
Very funny stories, I could relate with the author's sense of humor very well. However there was no plot, it was more of a blog or memoir of her year-long travels.
We had mixed reviews on this selection amongst our group members. Some really enjoyed the humor and adventurous aspects, as well as learning about the various places the author and her husband visited during their year on the road. However, others felt the author was a bit too spoiled and dwelled too much on the joy she seemed to find in being reclusive and lazy. Her "Long Island Princess" comments were a bit frequent and she made lots of cutesy "side comments" in parentheses that became annoying at times. However, the follow-up questions in the book are very good and allowed for good discussion about what we would do in a similar situation (or whether we would do something like that at all).
This book was fun to read and discuss. It made us all want to get our own bus and travel. The descriptions of the places Doreen visited and the people she met and visited were insightful but also full of witty observations. We loved talking to the author on speaker phone and loved going out armed with her martini recipes to enjoy sampling them at a local restaurant.
A fun true story of a psychiatrist who took a year long road trip with her husband in a bus. Humorous and well written.
We all loved the book, and quoted a lot of lines to each other that were laugh out loud funny. We also enjoyed the inspirational part. Best of all, Doreen called into our club and was as entertaining and inspirational as her book.
Our club loved this book. We each laughed while reading it and reading parts to our husbands. Then, we laughed again reading parts to each other during our meeting. It was an especially good read after we'd gone through a few heavier things. Nice to take a break, although there's more than just laughs with this one.
This is the kind of book that makes you learn more about the other members in your group, even if you've been together for a while. We got into a great discussion of our dreams, fears while sampling the author's martini recipes!
This was our favorite book club meeting. We all got into the Queen spirit, made martinis from the book, and had a wonderful discussion. What's great about this book is that you can discuss the growth of Doreen and her husband, and even the pets, but you can also talk about your own fantasies for adventure and what you would do with a year off. It really made us think about priorities and was quite inspiring. We also had the author call in and she was hysterical, but also answered our questions thoughtfully when needed. All in all, the best book we've read for a book club.
We read a lot of memoirs and we all agreed this was one of the best. It's hilarious, inspiring and you learn a lot about little known places in the US in a very enjoyable way. Then, there are the martinis...
Our club loved this book. I think it's our favorite this year. We found ourselves reading our favorites lines to each other and laughing all over again. The best part, and the reason for 5 stars was the discussion. Although on the surface, this book is just a breezy, light, fun read, it actually provides a lot of inspiration and food for thought.
We just had our bookclub a few nights ago and the author called in. Doreen was witty and thoughtful, answered all of our questions. Such a unique experience to discuss a book with the author herself. She was even able to suggest other authors who do this, and we're going to check out their books.
Really, one of our best book clubs ever, and that doesn't even count the martinis!
Our book club chose this for our first meeting. We all loved it and loved the author calling in. It's going to be hard to top this one.

Our book club agreed this was the funniest book we ever read, but it also had a lot of growth and even romance! We loved the relationship between the author and her husband. A really good discussion book on so many levels. Highly recommend.
