This was an interesting look at how eighties music shaped this (Rolling Stone) author. It made me think about what songs influenced me in the same way. I grew up in the eighties and loved all the references.
I discussed this with two other people - both were older than me - and they didn't know a lot of the references to bands and other eighties related topics.
