This was our first pick in our newly formed book club. I had heard a lot about the book so I was looking forward to reading it and discussing it with others.
Even though I was in MS at the time these events happened, I had no idea who Neil White was.
I have to say the book was more about the leprosy patients than about him, at least for me. I wanted to know more about Harry and Ella, what happened to them after Neil was released from prison. I did wonder if the author was truly sorry for the crime he had committed or if he was sorry he got caught. But I am glad he decided to share his view of Carville, and the story of all those people who lived there for so many years.
Our club really enjoyed this book and had a good discussion about it. We were able to see the author speak at a local college and I saw that the author is a genuine person and very believable! I would reccomend this book for other clubs. I didn't know a lot about leprosy until I read this book.
Interesting, but not profound or deeply insightful view of a flawed individual. One memorable character in the book but she's not very fully developed or explored.
Interesting tale .A man goes to prison for a bank fraud and discovers the prison is shared with Leprosy patients. Who knew these places still existed till the 1990's Very eye opening. Had a great discussion .
This is one of the few books that all of our members liked. We all learned something we didn't know by reading this book.
