"Well written story of the life of a First Lady." by jolong (see profile) 09/05/08

I had an advance copy of this book so I was unable to read it with my bookclub, but I can see how it would have made for an interesting discussion. I really did enjoy the story and think it was very well written. The end of the book, which focuses on her husbands presidency I must admit that I really did not care for. It seemed to compare way too much for my taste, to the present administration. It doesn't seem like much imagination was needed for the end of the book, but all of the characters were well developed throughout the whole story.

"Based loosely on Laura Bush. A nove about love and marriage." by christymg (see profile) 10/18/08

Good read, a lot to discuss.

"FANTASTIC!!!!!" by Hosozawa (see profile) 05/11/09

This was so much better than I thought it would be. The author has outdone herself here with a fscinating fictionalized story of Laura Bush. Couldn't put it down.

I really liked this book, it was much better than I anticipated...It made me want to read a biography on Laura Bush. I found it hard to put down, and when I finished it wanted more

"Mixed Review From Our Group" by Diane860 (see profile) 09/24/09

Our group had mixed reviews of this book. Members who read the book without thinking of Laura Bush and her family liked it better than those who kept thinking about Laura Bush while reading the book. It was liked as a book of fiction but everyone felt that they wished they never heard it was loosely based on the life of Laura Bush. Most would rather the book wasn't loosely based on the Bush family. It was difficult not to wonder what was fiction and what really happened and would have preferred it to be simply a book of fiction.

"American Wife: A Novel" by Neyly (see profile) 10/08/10

I liked the first part least, but found it fun once Alice and Charlie meet. Sometimes the juxtaposition between the fictional Alice and Charlie and President George and Laura Bush caused discomfort. I found that at times it added to the book and other times I felt uncomfortable with the author's fictitious license. Overall though I liked the book.

Offered interesting insights into the life of a political wife. Interesting to speculate about what parts were based in fact and what were truly fiction. Overall a good read that would lead to a lot of discussion.
