The kind of book I learned something from and enjoyed reading.

Sparked great discussion about the Civil War. Great read!

This book is slow to start but if you can get past the first 100 pages, you will not be able to put it down. Dramatic, heartfelt, moving. A MUST read, especially if you didn't grow up learning much about the Civil War.

I found this book very difficult to get into and I never felt any connection to Carrie (and she often annoyed me). I even put the book down and read something else, but felt committed enough to my book club to try to finish it. I am glad that I did as I learned a lot about a time in history that is important to our country and finally gained some grudging admiration for Carrie. Our bookclub did have a good discussion as a result of the book and I believe on the whole everyone truly enjoyed the read.

I have never been very interested in details of the Civil War, that is until I read this book. Historical fiction based on the Battle of Franklin, brings the lives lost and historical detail to the forefront. Franklin, Tennessee, is calling me, to visit the battle ground and Carnton, and to experience, even on a minute scale, a piece of our American history.

Parts of the book were slow but overall, really enjoyed this novel. Great discussion for bookclubs.

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about the Civil War but I knew nothing about Franklin, TN. It is wonderful to get to learn something new. The fictional story really brought the history of this battle to life. I enjoyed the story very much but I think it went a little long. I felt there were some parts that could have been omitted to keep the reader captured more completely. All in all in was a great read.

Not the most engaging story line but preserves an interesting piece of southern American history.
