I really enjoyed this book, it made me think of To Kill a Mocking Bird, one of my favorite books of all time.
Reminds me a lot of The Help with Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird thrown in. This book has a lot of grit with humanity brought to the table by Eula. An easy read that drew me in from the first page. Highly recommended.

I really loved this book. I like the characters Starla, Lula and Miss Cyrena. It gave some insight to the racial tensions in the 1960's. I felt sorry for Starla when she met her mother; she was disappointed, but I must say her father really stepped up to the plate and was a real father to her.
It was a good portrayal of the sixties and racial tension without drawing on guilt. It made me marvel again at the level of thought process and learning we all experience and how events force us to grow up!
This was a book that I had never even heard of, no blurbs on book reader websites, nothing coming up on top book club reads, but for book clubs that are all about the book, especially those who use book club questions to discuss, this is a great choice. The basis of the story is not something so new, but the way it was told, through the eyes of a 10 year old child, brought together so many different issues it was a great read.
