Not a difficult read, but a nice one for women. Our club's discussion centered around plot development and the characters' life choices, not extraneous issues, which showed our identification with them. A good choice for our group.
This book tells a believable story about mothers and daughters and friends and how we suppport and accept each other.
This book was good, a little slow at first, but then it picked up. The characters were believable. The bond that the knitting club members formed was inspiring.
A very easy read about the friendships made a knitting store and the bond between a mother and daughter. It was difficult at first to get into, but did pick up as the story went a long. I feel the ending was very predictable. Overall a good beach book, not necessarily a great pick for a book club.
Our club found this book to be sweet but pretty stereotypical of a "ladies' group" kind of book. We didn't feel the characters were very believable or well developed and we found the story line to be predictable in a lot of places. Anita was our favorite character. The theme of community and our need for kindred spirits in the midst of life sparked some conversation...but we weren't wowed by the book...we found ourselves commenting on other books that we read that were like this one.
Okay we get it. Multi cultural group of women support each other despite their own issues. Felt forced.
This book was filled with twists and turns and the ending was unexpected. It makes one stop and think of life and the impact one person can have on so many others.
The book started out slow, but then some character building made the book more interesting. During the character building it did seem to jump around to different characters more than I would have liked and it also jumped around in time as well. Most of us in our book club had just finished reading Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah and it was really captivating and hard to put down. This book was not the same way. (spoiler for both books if you keep reading) The death and cancer theme was also not something we really wanted to read again after all of us crying for Firefly Lane so it was a bit of a dissapointment. The characters also didn't capture us as much as the previous book so we weren't as saddened by the end result, maybe that was a good thing.
Not everyone in the book club finished the book and barely got started as the beginning was tough. It wasn't a great pick for our first official book club book. (Firefly Lane was a House Party pick for us).
Just ok for me. I thought it was well-written with nice character development, but a little predictable in the plot department, although I was in the minority on predictability. The meeting was more fun for me than the actual book. We got together in a yarn store. There were treats (homemade cupcakes, coffe/tea, and candy) and the experienced knitters taught the newbs some of the basics. I can safely say that I have never felt so incompetent in my life! However, I was determined to leave with some grasp on it and: success! I don't know that I will ever be a devoted knitter, but I will finish what I started (TBD... scarf???). I didn't contribute much to the conversation, but I enjoyed listening while I vigorously attacked that poor yarn. Only one problem: I learned how to cast on and very basic knit... pattern, I guess? ...but how do I cast off?!?
I loved this book!!!! It was such a fun read. It was really easy to love the characters. The mother daughter relationship was great and was the true friendships that were made
For years I tried to learn to knit with no success and last year, while pregnant with my first child, I learned on my own. When saw this book, decided to give it a shot and got so inspired that I decided to take my knitting and crocheting to a next level. In a very simple way the book showed me that things can be easier than we think and we can overcome everything when we have good friends to count on.
Author had good insights in to multiple type/personalities of women. I enjoyed the book.
I liked it, didn't love it. And even the tears I had at completing the book couldn't make me love the book as a whole. The author seemed to jump around a lot while developing the characters. I feel that she worked hard at trying to depict an attitude of the characters with the language that was used in the moments of frustration of some of the characters. While I am not a 'Pollyanna' about life, I do like 'meat' in a book and I could smell a little in her effort to create a bond among the women but the book was somewhat predictable and could have done without the language (when you throw the 'f' word into a book I am reading I immediately do not like the book) and still had the same story-line. I guess I would say that there was a lack of depth in the book.
