Two best friends are in a car, on a snow covered road, get into an accident, killing one,'maureen' the driver. the other teenager,'bridget' is in the hospital, in a coma. because the car belongs to maureen, they think she was driving the car. Maureen wakes up and tells them shes maureen and not bridget.
thinking it was really 'bridget' in a coma, her parents by her bedside. when they find out its really their daughter that died, the mother turns to drinking, and is very mean to maureen. In the end bridgets sister does forgive maureen.
Like her Deep End of the Ocean, this book deals with ways families deal with catastrophic events that occur in their ordinary lives-ones that could happen to any of us. Brain injury and death of a child are depressing, but I found myself much more sympathetic and involved with these characters than those in Deep End.
