What made this book work for us was the fact that we were watching the Olympics as we were reading the book. The storyline generated a lot of discussions and the relationships were key. There was a little disappointment that we didn't actually get to the Olympics, as everything takes place before the London event. Many of us also felt that the ending wasn't quite believable. It will spark some great conversations.

This book was painful for me. I was drawn to the summary and enjoyed Cleave's last novel, but this one is too much work. I have to admit that I called it quits with this one. Hopefully my book club does not choose this as a selection.

I could not put it down. There were twists and unexpected turns throughout the book. The information about the Olympic training and bike racing on the velodrome track was interesting The characters were well developed, the choices made by the characters make for good discussion. I recommend this book.

This book was not nearly as good as "Little Bee". While the look into the world of competitive cycling was interesting, I found the main characters actions unrealistic.

"Too contrived" by atymkiw (see profile) 11/24/12

Chris Cleave is a great writer but this book in no way matched Little Bee. The plot was very intricate like Cleave's previous book and offered a couple of twists but mostly it felt very contrived.

"Gold by Chirs Cleave is good but not award winning." by lizblair (see profile) 12/30/12

I liked this book but I can't say that I loved it. I enjoyed learning about the Olympic strategies, and all that goes with the hard training. The side story of pediatric illness was hard to read at times, but put it all in perspective. The story line held my interest as did Cleave's writing style, telling the tale from different points of view.
