"Varied and important information; keen insight into often overlooked agency; very readible even with medical scientific information; this book concerns our world-real world need to know information" by Lanning (see profile) 01/27/06

"Timely look at the disease detectives of the CDC by a veteran reporter" by ahwertheim (see profile) 01/27/06

This book is a fascinating glimpse into the public health system, both nationally and internationally. The author followed the newest epidemiology recruits at the CDC; she alternates their personal stories with chapters devoted to specific cases of disease detection, such as malaria, cholera, AIDS, small pox, SARS, anthrax, TB, and others. The book is written for the lay person, and is highly readable. In our global society, with avian flu on the horizon, the stories of this group of workers who are trained in early disease detection and containment will keep you reading!

"Beating Back the Devil is extremely well researched, well written, and timely. It is a page turner. We need to take our hats off to the doctors, researchers, scientists and supporting personnel at t" by Avid (see profile) 01/27/06

The characters are many and all memorable.
