At first I didn't want to read this book because it was so old having been written in 1944. However, I am so glad that I did. The writing was remarkable. I loved the humbleness and kindness of this simple man and the love he showed to all. He lived his life just as God intended us to live ours and it uplifted me spiritually.
I loved this book... it told the story of Father Chisolm and his journey to China (through other parishes) as well as his trials while there. I found his gentle spirit uplifting, and a model of Christianity. There were many words that i didn't know (pusillanimous, pelments, biretta, bedizened etc), which actually made it interesting, since so many books don't challenge the readers' vocabulary any more. This was a super book.. too bad it was so hard to find a copy!
This provocative, well-written novel examines the question of who will receive eternal salvation. Although it was first published in 1941, the ideas that are expressed are just as relevant today--maybe even more so considering how many people have rejected organized religion. Because the author was a keen observer of people and places, the story is full of interesting characters and situations that subtly lead readers to draw their own conclusions about what constitutes a God-pleasing life..
