If you really want to change your life, you have to give up your old one. Being lost, and in need of direction Cheryl decides to take a walk, which is more of a journey for Cheryl Strayed. This is the authors story of her hike on the Pacific Trail. I remember being that young woman who thought she could do anything, I just never did. Cheryl changed her life, was stronger than she thought and found the things she needed. The author can write, you can understand her yearning for direction and change. Read it even if only to read the passage about the death of her horse. I found the writing very moving. Can women today do what she did? I'm not sure.
I loved feeling a part of the author's journey on the PCT. It was interesting to see how her life's issues paralleled the struggles she encountered on the trail.
wow, she really hated herself. it's a well written story about how she learned about herself and learned to like herself
I thought this book had some great life lessons. Cheryl Strayed's personal journey was inspiring. I really felt that the last 1/3 of the book was better than the first 2/3. I gained the most insight from the last 1/3 and had the most "aha" moments. I really appreciated her honesty and straightforward manner in which she told her story.
Reading of Cheryl Strayed's struggles and courage to embark on a challenging journey on the Pacific Coast Trail was inspiring and thought-provoking.
Somewhat self-absorbing and hard for me to get into, but writing and quotes were meaningful.
Cheryl Strayed has written a wonderful memoir here. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Her style of writing is honest, she bares her soul unabashedly, which is inspiring, as well as the amazing true story. Makes me want to never give up!
Cheryl's use of language and words is amazing. Her sorrow at the loss of her mother is so profound that she hikes the PCT to reconnect with herself. She is amazingly blunt about her own indiscretions and she sets out on a journey a little naïve of what she will encounter. A great read and makes you want to put on your hiking boots.
"Poor Me" should be the subtitle of this mess. Graphic sex, no real writing style, too many problems to mention. Heroin is "beautiful??????" Give me a break. Oprah should be ashamed of promoting this mess.
Was this real? Starting with the author's name, I felt that this book was just an attempt to make money. Dull, repetitious, obviously not my favorite.
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail
This story is either greatly embellished, or the author experienced a case of 'dumb luck'. Not convinced 'it' happened as written.
Several of us in our group found that the writing was good but we just did not like the author. Appeared overly self involved and not the kind of person that we would like to know. She was very open and acknowledged her weaknesses but ......
Seemed like the whole adventure was goaled toward writing a book in the future.
This is an amazing memoir that reads like a novel about the author's life circumstances interwoven into her adventure solo-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail when she was in her 20's. She describes such an amazing journey starting from the Mojave Desert going all the way through California and Oregon and Washington and motives you to take hikes yourself! And interspersed throughout were titles of books Cheryl had her friend mailed to her in care packages to outposts she planned to stop along the way. I loved that! Gives you more ideas about what other books to pick up and read.
Overall our book club enjoyed this book. For anyone that has ever been backpacking for an extended time it reminds you of how different life is on the trail. While the authors morals were questionable at times, she is a good writer and the book was an honest portrayal of her experience. Our club generated some good discussion from this book.
Well written and more interesting than it sounds! If you like the adventure genre and what drives people to extremes, this is an interesting combination of a hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and overcoming a challenging childhood.
Great non-fiction selection, well written and attention catching.
This book was slow at first, Then I grew to love Cheryl and her struggles.
This book is very dependent on who the reader is... as a group we felt that we could have benefited by more character development. As much as we learned a lot about hiking the PCT trail we didn't feel we were able to capture the true Cheryl and what drew her to the trail to begin with, and why she was so self-destructive.
I was looking forward to reading this book however I was very disappointed. I cannot even believe a lot of what is written...it seems just too perfectly wrapped up. On top of that, the main character is unlikeable.
Amazing life changing story. Gripped my interest from the very beginning and kept it the whole way through. Loved it so much because I'm an outdoor girl that loves challenges, however that would be one I won't try.
I loved this book and so did the others in my book club. The book didn't cause any controversy, but we still had a lengthy conversation about it. The memoir was honest and at times painful, which shows Cheryl Strayed to be just as brave now as she was when she started her journey 20 years ago. I couldn't put this book and think of it often.
Cheryl made some interesting decisions. We had great converstions at bookclub about this book about her intersting decisions. I reccomend the book solely for the discussions that u will have
Everyone that read this book in our book club seemed to get something huge out of it! What an interesting and inspiring read!
We had a great Book Club discussion and everyone enjoyed this book.
I enjoyed the story and was rooting for the author. Learned about the PCT and backpacking in general.
Cheryl Strayed writes beautifully about her quest to find herself as she undertakes hiking the Pacific Coast Trail.
This book is an amazing journey of one woman's life during a dark time in her life during her early 20's. It makes you think, do I or could I ever have the courage to do something like she did? And if I don't, to re-examine your own life and find courage to do what seems impossible.
It was a little slow moving at times, although to be fair I listened on CD and didn't particularly care for the voice of the reading. But, all in all I found it to be very interesting and I admire her strenght all though she certainly made some questionable decisions during the journey. I listened to the ending of the book twice because it was so touching and cried both times! I really like the ending...
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Wild. I didn\\\'t think I\\\'d really enjoy the book, but it really pulled me in. It\\\'s a quick read and very inspiring. Makes me want to revisit my plans to hike the AT!
I really enjoyed this book. It was fascinating to watch the author come to terms with her past and her demons and emerge a better person.
I cannot believe the fortitude of this woman. I do admire her for what she accomplished. When running from my car into my home on cold, wintry evenings I think about her lying in her tent on the mountain during various snowstorms. brrrrr. It makes me sad that Cheryl had to experience all the great loss in her life in order to take this amazing journey.
I enjoyed this book and admire the author for her courage and determination. I didn't realize until the close of the book tho that her hike occurred 20 yrs ago.
I really enjoyed this book. The true life adventures that the author tells in her story kept my attention and made it difficult for me to put this book down. Cheryl Strayed\\\'s determination to complete the Pacific Crest Trail after many challenges is amazing. This is a book that I didn\\\'t want to end.
I read the book quickly to get to the end as fast as possible . I was in constant fear for the safety of the main character .
I gave this book a 4 out of 5 - we also picked this book for this month Book Club but haven't discussed it yet. I found it exciting to read couldn't get back to it fast enough to see what happens next and it also made me laugh and scream at times !
A great adventure story, makes you want to go out and try new things.
A great story of a woman's strength after she hits bottom and decides that walking the Pacific Crest Trail alone will help her to put her life back together.
I rooted for Cheryl the whole way! What an inspiration!!!
What made the book so inspiring is that it is non-fiction. It makes one think of their own life-changing adventures and how we can live our own lives to the fullest.
Cheryl Strayed's life whirled out of control after her mother died. Falling into a maelstrom of infidelity and drugs resulting in a divorce. So what better way to "find yourself" than to try a completely new endeavor - hiking the Pacific Coast Trail from California to Canada.
Strayed learns much about the trail, hiking, the people on the trail and most of all herself.
Would she be a better, more stable person at the end of the trail? Walk her path and see.
