My book club had read Mr. Shors' first novel, Beneath a Marble Sky, which we enjoyed. We actually spoke with him on a speakphone, and had a wonderful chat.
We decided to read The Wishing Trees, and are so glad that we did. This is a beautiful, hopeful novel, centered on the round-the-world travels of a widower and his ten-year-old daughter. While this novel is at times sad, it's ultimately uplifting and lovely. It's also a great book club book in that it inspires thoughtful discussion about what a parent or a child should do in certain situations. It's also revealing of other cultures. I'd highly recommend this novel to any book clubs.
We spoke to Mr. Shors again about The Wishing Trees, and talking with him is really a memorable experience.
I LOVED this book though a few of our members couldn't get through the book due to the sadness of the characters.
It was so predictable that it was annoying. It was well-written and I would try that author again; however, it was so unrealistic. On the other hand, maybe it was a good thing to read something that I WISH could/would happen.
I loved this novel, as did the other members of my book club. It's set in seven or eight countries and tells the story of a father and daughter's journey. It's beautifully written and is quite moving.
