The beginning of this book was true to the title. The description of the boys home life was detailed and interesting. About the time that the story should be wrapping up it ended abruptly. There seemed to be a large chunk of story missing. So the ending was difficult to understand. Not my favorite book.
Just can't say enough about this incredible this book. I started this book in the evening and could not put it down until I was finished later that night. This is the book you recommend to your friend when they are looking for a read that keeps them glued to the pages.
This novel deserves a literary award. Author uses eye catching staccato type language that evolves along with the boys. Humorous, depressing, thought provoking,-- it takes you in, like reading someone's journal. He relates sometimes ugly situations without being graphic and allows the reader to read between the lines. I wanted to reach inside the book and take these little boys by the hand.....reality is tough to read about sometimes. Great insight into how the family shapes the child/children and why we are who we are.
Looking forward to reading another one of his books!
Torres's debut novel, We The Animals, is a challenging read. Written in a unique style of prose poetry, it tells the story of three brothers growing up in upstate New York. Our book group was engaged and interested until ... About 100 pages into this 124 page book it takes a VERY dark turn and the author lost us.
