"A good book that delves into a dark part of American history" by jolong (see profile) 03/05/09

This book was overwhelmingly enjoyed by most of our members. The historical perspective that Dallas shared in this book was amazing. The storyline was great and there was even a bit of a mystery weaved into the pages that was resolved by the end.

Really liked the characters and the storyline in this book. Felt sorry for the Japanese and what we put them through during this time.

"WW II/Japanese Camps" by dmc1230 (see profile) 03/28/09

I like Sandra Dallas a lot and enjoy her characters. This was a quick read and, while I liked the book a great deal, I found some of the characters to be too stereotypical. The story is told from the perspective of a 13 year old girl and she's a delight. Her parents are almost too good to be true and it's easy to compare the father to Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. I would almost classify this book as a "young adult" novel and recommend it to 9th graders and above. It's a great way to introduce them to the dark history of the internment camps used for Japanese Americans in WWII. A good read.

This was a good book. The main character telling the story is 13 and how she deals with the difficult situation she and her family are in during the war is interesting.

This is the second book I have read about the Japanese living in The United States during WWII and I was taken aback on how they were treated during this time of crisis. Moved into camps and treated as anything other then what they were...citizens of the USA. How tragic.

"From a Different Viewpoint" by retiredreaderNE (see profile) 07/24/13

Once again Sandra Dallas has crafted an entertaining story populated with complex characters. It is refreshing to read about a Japanese internment camp from the perspective of the citizens of the small Colorado town of Ellis. Dallas portrays the deep level of racial prejudice that permeates the citizens. Foremost, "Tallgrass" is the story of a farm family and how they live, work and love. The actions flows naturally and the story reaches a satisfying conclusion.
