The book was fantastic. It reads well and I can't imagine a reader that wouldn't enjoy it. Can't wait to see the movie.
It was slow through about 3/4 of the story but a very interesting ending. I started to re-read it to make sure i understood it. Our book club members found much to discuss about it today.
I found myself having to push to get through some portions of the book. I thought it interesting in realizing there was such an apartment that was not fiction and learned of the actual people involved in the "real" apartment. I felt the last 70-80 pages were the most interesting. The character interaction was at times hard to follow. This was a free book from Book Movement for our book club.
Our book club received this book as one of your free give-aways. I was most intrigued with M. de Florian character and the social mores of the period. But author also did well weaving two stories together, past & present. Present day story had some feel of a romance novel but overall enjoyable.
I found the historical part of the story to be really interesting. The overlay of the present day was lacking however in excitement and buy in by the reader
Not a bad beginning but didn't live up to its potential. The historical premise is an interesting one as is the belle epoque storyline--but the modern day story is somewhat flat and insipid. The author also appeared to lose interest in both as it moved towards conclusion.
Our group was mixed in our assessment of the book itself, but we had a great, good time in our discussions.
Loved reading about this historic period and characters.
April Vogt loses herself in Marthe's journals and her heirlooms. While April assesses her own situation, she has some personal revelations about her marriage through her relationship with Luc. She begins to reassess her lack of maturity in dealing with difficult situations and decides to face up to them and see what the future holds with Troy, her father, and her brother.
The historical basis of the novel was good, and had a lot of potential but the modern love story was extremely predictable. Also the characters were under developed. Wanted/needed to know more about who they were.
