A great mystery that kept me guessing to the end. Interesting characters that grow and change along with the plot. A bit draggy in some spots, but altogether a good book, well written and insightful.
I loved all of Tana French's previous novels. While this was well written, I found it disappointing. Compared to her other novels, the pace of not wanting to put it down was not there and the story was a little slow. Well I suppose you can't have one without the other. I had an expectation going in that wasn't met. I have recommended her other books numerous times as being wonderful, outstanding, and must reads. I cannot say this about her latest novel, it was only average for me.
With strong voice and a haunting story, Tana French has a winner with Broken Harbor. The story follows Mike "Scorcher" Kennedy, an Irish Murder Squad detective, who has an excellent track record of solving murders the honest way. This case, however, haunts him, and he finds that when he is called out to investigate the murder of Pat Spain and his two young children, and the attempted murder of Jenny Spain, he is forced to face ghosts from his past.
Although Mike is an excellent detective, he finds that this case, which takes place miles outside of Dublin, is in the same location where his mother committed suicide years ago. Because of that, he begins to be rattled early on. As the pieces of the case begin to come together, Mike believes that he and his rookie partner, Richie Curran, have done the impossible - solved a media saturated case in a matter of days with a solid confession and strong evidence. When Richie makes a simple mistake, however, the entire case (and Mike's reputation) are threatened.
This mystery-suspense novel is well written and captivating. It is intriguing and even has a surprise twist or two at the ending. While it is a bit long, because of the fully developed characters and the natural dialogue, the story flows quickly and naturally.
This is a terrific read! It's a psychological thriller. Her writing is superb as usual, her characters well developed, and her themes current. I hated for it to be over! It's as good as Faithful Place.
We thought this book was a good read. A change of pace type of book.
Our Book group reaction to this book was varied from 2 to 5 stars. It was difficult because of some of the subject matter (murdered children) but it was also interesting and insightful about police procedures and interrogation.
Dramatic story a little long in dialog and descriptions.
A sad story that is a present day reality.
Every scene and conversation is fully and beautifully described in completeness. No detail escapes the author's attention. Unfortunately this makes for a very long-winded book. This author is a very talented writer, but an even more talented writer could have written the same thing using less words. The detectives repeatedly interviewed people who were EXTREMELY talkative. They talked on and on and on for pages and pages. And all of that was after they refused to say anything. It seemed a little far-fetched.
