When we thought of The Book of Paul, the things we know about this book are not at all what we had in mind. This book is riveting and twisted yet fascinating in a way that makes you turn to the next page. Paul, a surrogate father to Martin, has freed him from the entrapment of pain, but only by exposing him to it in bizarre and deforming ways. As is always the case, the broken retain some wholeness in them, and Martin’s whole part is awakened by Rose, a neighboring tattoo artist Martin falls in what he knows of love with. It gives him a determination to face Paul and all of the brokenness he’s caused. It’s like an out of control train car - no caboose; you can’t stop it until its over, and you, the reader, are still safe.

I feel like I know some of what just happened to me in the reading of this book, but not all of it. It deserves a second look, but I’m afraid of all of the horrors, devils and angels and religions that are twisted up within it.
