Kapuscinski provides very interesting narrative on "The Histories" by Herodotus. His point is that whenever he travels, he travels two different journeys: one where he is reporting on the foreign affairs of his time, the other with Herodotus and his discoveries. While Kapuscinski provides thoughtful reflections on Herodotus' writings, by the end of the book, I felt like I had just read one big summary/commentary on "The Histories". There were passages that were absolute gems, as Kapuscinski writes about his own experiences and travels between the two eras, but too often I wanted to hear more about him. I know he has written several other books (i.e. The Shah of Shahs, The Emperor, The Shadow of the Sun), so perhaps I can gain a better understanding/feel more fulfilled with Kapuscinski as a person and eternal journeyer after reading those. "Travels with Herodotus" is nevertheless a valuable read, one man's thoughtful, compassionate, informed reflection of the ways of our world. Perhaps this is better a book to be read on your own.
