I was so impressed how each page was seamlessly woven to bring out in me, Emotions that are so close to my core.It is all about Family,Trust,Love,Loss.and Healing..Unlike other books,at times,Kristin never rushes the reader, she truly gets it..I am recommending "Night Road" to YA's and Adults alike,,,Relationships and the need to understand them ,span many age groups and genders as well..I look forward to reading Kristin Hannah again..She is a new Author for me,and was very glad I took the step to explore the depth of her writing...
This book really surprised me. It got me so involved with the characters. It is very well written and didn't become too melodramatic. It gives us insight into how the choices we make can affect our lives.
Loved reading this book. Definitely touched me on many different emotional levels. The book unfolds in a few different ways which kept me continuously interested in the story. Portrays the characters in such a way that I felt like I really knew them and at times what they were experiencing.
Kristin Hannah is one of my all time favorite authors. Her books often deal with contemporary issues much like, Jodi Picoult. This is a great book, dealing with raising teenagers, drinking and driving and losing a child. I really enjoyed this new novel from Kristin. A page turner that I didn't want to end. Great for book clubs, sparking interesting discussions.
Great book for book club discussions. How would you react if you were in the same situation. Love Kristin Hannah books. They always make you think. Easy read and a real page turner.
Every books she writes just sucks you in from the first page. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
We all rated this novel about a helicopter mom, a satellite dad, and a tragic alcohol related accident a 9 out of 10.
This book was really good. It made us cry and was inspired at the same time. We had a lot of great discussions about life and our children.
hits a little close to home for those of us with kids almost ready for high school, but a great read!
About a third of the way through the audio book I was listening to, I looked it up on library web site to make sure it wasn't a teen book. Very involved description of teen angst and friendship. I enjoyed the book although I grew impatient with the characters. The aftermath of the tragedy was depressingly realistic.
Another great book by Kristen Hannah! It was slightly predictable, but yet drew you in and had you very emotionally connected with the characters!
This started out as one of those stories that you just can't put down, and it stayed that way until the accident. Then I thought it dragged a little. The one thing I would have changed was the ending. It was all wrapped up so neat and so quickly it took away from the story line. That being said, the story itself was a topic for discussion. What would anyone do if that were their circumstance? I think it calls into play what level of forgiveness would we really have for another person if the thing that was taken from us was our child. That is what made this a story worth reading!
This book was fantastic. I could not put it down. It made me rethink every decision I make with my kids. It was completely life changing for me. Would recommend this book to everyone. Definitley alot to discuss for book clubs!!
Felt the book was shallow, full of unbelievable dialogue and was very predictable.
I enjoyed Night Road but felt it was a little too predictable.
As a whole, we enjoyed the book. We felt it was predictable, but at the same time kept our attention - some said they couldn't put it down. As retired teachers, we felt no sympathy for Jude, as we all could identify many parents we'd encountered who fit the same mold.
This story of friendship, mother love, and family is well written and moves at a good pace. The mother, Jude, is both over-protective and loving, and constantly warns her twin high-school seniors of the perils of drinking and driving. It is therefore predictable that a fatal accident occurs and one twin is killed. The grieving process for everyone involved is long-lasting and not pleasant to read about, but the ending of the story is more uplifting and hopeful.
This book sucks you into the characters and you feel what they feel. Be prepared to struggle along with them. But to also feel happiness when it's achieved. Once you start reading it'll be hard to put it down. It's very thought provoking material.
WOW!
What an emotional roller-coaster ride!
I cried, then I laughed. smiled, giggled, and then I cried my eyes out!
The emotional highs were very high and the lows were in the pits!
I stayed up late and then got up early to finish this book.
Very richly written characters.
I fell in love with Lexi from the first... who wouldn't.
She was such a lost little girl.
I could empathize with Jude as a 'helicopter' Mother.
I took me a few minutes to get that, but I too hovered over our boys.
Not quite to her extent, but probably more than I should have.
I will be looking for more of Kristin Hannah's books.
I think I already have 'Firefly Lane' somewhere on my bookshelves.
Now I must go FIND it.
The storyline is enjoyable; however, it is very predictable. It is a very emotional story of love and loss, of friends and family, and one that I could connect with. I found some parts lacked detail and descriptions, whereas others had a bit too much, which made some parts drag on. Overall, I liked the book.
We had a very lively disussion about this book. The big question of the evening was "As a parent, what is the best thing to do for your children when it comes to drinking?" and we just couldn't answer it. Every Mother should read this book.
While I HATED Jude in this book, I loved the rest of the characters and found the book extremely moving. Great book club choice!
Our group loved Night Road-- it was so well written and just propelled you through it. Every one of us felt that we could relate to the book--- it wasn't overly sentimental (although you should be prepared with tissues) but Kristin did a wonderful job of making you feel as though the story could be anyone you know.
This was a compelling and gripping story for all parents and their teens to read. The majority of our members enjoyed this book because it made us think about our own lives and similar experiences we had in raising our own teenagers and how we may have done things differently. The key takeaway from this story is how important is for us as parents to "Talk To Our Kids" through the dangerous years to help them understand that one bad decision can destroy friendships and lives changed forever. But most importantly, say what we mean and mean what we say.
This book has so many emotional twists and turns. Even though I knew what was coming, I still cried when it happened. There will be things you hate and things you think are unfair, but stick with it, it is such a beautiful story.
A helicopter parent runs her twins lives with an iron hand. When faced with tragedy, none are able to move on until a stranger enters their lives. An "easy" read with lots of food for thought.
Kristin Hannah continues to display her uncanny understanding of people and their emotions. Unfortunately, the entire premise was one that, had I know what happened on Night Road, I never would have wanted to read it. Most of our club members are grandparents and great grandparents, and they really were not into a book about teenagers. For me, it struck too close to home. This did not happen to my child, but to a very best friend. The book can lead a discussion into overly protective parenting, underage drinking, how individuals cope with the same tragedy to name a few. The book moves along - although I felt that it dwelt a little too long on Jude's depression - and is a "good read" but it certainly is not for everyone. Our club members were mixed in their feeling about the book. Over half really did not like it or the subject matter, Several others found many things they could learn about and liked it very much.
First, everyone loved the book—said it was a “can’t put down” one. We all agree that it should be “required” reading for parents of teenagers, or soon-to-be teenagers. It is a very easy read; in fact, teenagers themselves could read this book and hopefully get the message that drinking and driving is never a good thing. It looks at a serious problem in depth and addresses the repercussions of the action. One of our club members said it would make a good Lifetime movie—and we all agreed with her.
Night Road is a novel about a helicopter mother, Jude, of twins Mia and Zach, who spends her life hovering over her family and their friend Lexi, until disaster strikes. The ideal family, who has everything, is torn apart by an accident caused by driving while intoxicated. What happens to this family and how everybody handles the tragedy are the primary concerns of the novel. The author explores many aspects of the characters with dignity, understanding and sensitivity.
I just couldn't buy into this storyline. The characters were predictable and two-dimensional, and the plot seemed like a Lifetime movie rerun. I literally laughed out loud at some of Mia's ridiculous actions--was she 14 or four?? On the plus side, however, we really enjoyed our discussion for this book---not one member liked it, but that didn't stop us from talking about it! I've read and enjoyed some of Ms. Hannah's other efforts, but this one--meh.
Rarely do I cry out loud, from sadness or joy, but I did more than once reading this book. So much good conversation for a book club of mothers!
While this book was easy to read, and a couple of members confessed to becoming teary at points, we all thought it was pretty unrealistic and very predictable. The mother strove to be the perfect mom, but failed to see her kids as kids - and the tragedy that occurred surprised no one in our group. Her reaction to it was disturbing, and while no one who has not been in her position can second guess what she did and how she reacted, it just seemed too contrived.
The book had my attention from the beginning. A good read. Tragic, but good. I recommend it.
I found this book to be a bit like a Hallmark movie. Happy friendship story, tragic accident, happy ending. But it did give me great insight into grief. There has to be no greater grief than losing your child in a preventable accident. The author helped me see how hard it can be to move forward with life after a tragic death.
A very moving, well written novel that every mother of teenagers can relate to. This is a book about dealing with grief, redemption, love, forgiveness, second chances and learning to let go. Kristin Hannah's message of keeping an open line of communication with your children is a great one.
Our book club won this book through another book club site. We all enjoyed the book and like that it ended so well after all the trauma that went on within this family. The story shows just what can happen to tear a family apart and and then how love can bring it all back together.
It seemed a bit "youngish" for my tastes. But it did show choices people make that prove to be disastrous. It was a;n okay read but certainly not among my favorites.
I could not read through my tears at points in the book. Lexi had such compassion for the people she loved.
I really enjoyed this book. It was very touching and inspiring that Lexi was so upbeat after the life she lived. Keep a box of kleenix handy while you are reading.
This is not a great work of literature but it is an emotional read that speaks to parents.
There are some unexpected turns. It inspires thoughts about what you as a parent in
the same circumstances might do and gives you a chance to critique another parents'
choices.
This book brought tears to my eyes, the way it was written . . . very emotional!!
a little bit on the sad side but overall a good story.
I really enjoyed this book. It isn't really a great discussion book but it is good beek to read and get lost in. I enjoy Kristin Hannah. I was attached to the characters and found myself crying while reading. I recommend this book if you are looking to get lost in a good book.
after the first few chapters, the rest is totally predictable and obvious. dislike books like. that being said, there is quite of lot of discussion that can come from the circumstances
This one will make you cry, if you have a heart and are a Mom, for sure. Our group mostly loved it. There are so many topics that lead to great discussions in this book. Hannah is very good at representing both sides of the coin and does again in this story. You can decide where you stand in the novel when you read the decisions that have to be made. A great story that is well written.
This book is an easy flowing book. This was a great story even though it made me cry. It made me consider a lot of things as a mother. I had a hard time putting it down. Kristin Hannah did a great job of keeping my interest, making it hard to put down.
This is my second book by Kristin Hannah (first read Firefly Lane). Both stories had a bit of the same feel to it – traditional family teenage girl befriends a teenage girl from a dysfunctional background. And while the stories didn’t exactly follow the same pathways, I had to deduct a star for lack of originality. That being said, it was still a beautiful story full of raw emotion and human frailty and certainly stands on its own as a testament to good writing. As in Firefly Lane, the characters in Night Road were well developed and the reader can easily connect with them. I felt about two-thirds into the book the story got a little rushed when the span of 5-6 years was accomplished in 2 pages, but I suppose it was necessary to bring closure to the story.
Two girls, both loners, find one another during their first week in high school and a kindred friendship evolves. One girl (Mia) comes from a wealthy family who enjoys all the amenities that come with money and education. The other girl (Lexi) comes from a life in foster homes while her drug-addict mother bounces back and forth out of her life. Mia has a twin brother, Zach, and the three become bosom buddies throughout their high school days. Graduation is upon them and Mia and Zach are looking forward to moving to California together and attending the same college. Lexi’s dreams do not include money for out-of-state tuition so the local junior college is the best she can do. Through much of the story, I wanted to strangle Mia and Zach’s mother. I found her manipulative, unreasonable and extremely selfish. Even when she eventually finds a “lightbulb” moment, her redemption was a bit too late for me. (Again, the author did such a fantastic job writing the mother’s character that I still don’t like her after the book is finished. Now that is good writing.)
It would be hard to divulge much more about the story without spoiling it, but suffice it to say that events occur, hearts break and lives are altered in such a way that the future is hard to see. Night Road takes you on a journey of grief, first love and true love, courage and forgiveness. It is only through the innocence of youth and a bit of Grace that redemption is found.
I rated this book so high because it was so well executed and written. The story line was not one that I would typically read. However, being a new Mom, I really connected with the characters and the difficult choices that will come with motherhood and raising a family.
Kristin Hannah finely crafts her characters so that by the end of her books, you are still thinking about them and the consequences of their actions. I enjoyed the story of Lexi and the Farraday family, but some events were a bit predictable and others were a bit contrived. I still would recommend this title.
