Struggle through the first 150 pages or so to get set up for a page turning novel. At times the subject matter is quite troubling but you become so involved with these characters and events.
Another extremely well written novel by Wally Lamb. So many themes to discuss and think about. Such great insight into some difficult characters.
Very moving account of a family, with dark secrets, Really covered everything, I couldn't put the book down, was very moved by Lambs writing style and content.
I've heard people rave about Wally Lamb and his books, so when our group chose this as a group read I was delighted...until I started reading. The main plot seemed cliched and contrived. The characters were more caricatures and stereotypes than fully-developed characters. If that wasn't enough (it was for me), there were far too many extraneous chapters that seemed to be nothing more than filler.
Although no one in my group seemed to like this book or any of the characters, it did make for a lively discussion. A discussion on everything wrong with the book, but a lively discussion nonetheless.
Started off a little slow but eventually picked up and became very addicting. Best way to describe it is like an emotional roller coaster. Some passages are very graphic and detailed but is necessary for the overall emotion of the book. Highly recommend.
