This is my all time favourite book. I selected it for our book group and was met with either great enthusiasm or disdain, but great, great discussion. I loved the characters in this book and the writing, i found it totally charming. I did notice that when i brought forth information about the author some did change their opinions of the character. If you want a lively discussion, i recommend this book.
I have a very difficult time dealing with people who think that they are entitled. So in the first few pages of this book I decided that I hated the main character and he deserved whatever calamity came his way.
After reading nothing but Pulitzer Prize winning novels this year, my main question is "What are the guidelines for deciding a Pulitzer novel?" Randomness?
I really didn't enjoy this book. It's a convaluted tale of confusing characters. It was a drudgery to finish.
I thought the title said it completely. I normally don't like books where the characters make their own problems but I enjoyed this very much. As in most books I wanted to see what was going to happen to all the characters and although I though the ending was a bit weak I still enjoyed it.
Well written but I just did not like the main character.
I always appreciate a New Orleans-local backdrop, as well as outrageous characters.
Uproar, brilliant cast of characters, magnificent plot.
It's a cult novel and you either get the humour and laugh your pants off or you don't get it and you hate the book! I fall into the "laugh" camp. It is beautifully plotted and as funny as Laurel and Hardy ever were. It takes the absurd to ridiculous heights.
Out of 8 members - 4 did not like the book enough to see the humor in the book so gave up reading it. The other 4 members would give it an overall 4 stars. This division did lead to a good discussion.
