Introduction

How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you hear the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.

Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.

As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state, and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming town pulling its way slowly back from the greatest crisis in its long history.

"Dewey the Library Cat"by Peggy M. (see profile) 07/13/17

People think cats aren't smart and can't be trained. Dewey proves them wrong! I have three very well trained cats and enjoy stories about extraordinary animals such as Dewey -who gave and received love... (read more)

Some of the ladies had read this book several times. One had an autographed copy. They enjoyed all the cat stories, and added several of their own.

DEWEY: THE SMALL-TOWN LIBRARY CAT WHO TOUCHED THE WORLD by Vicki Myron, Bret Witter (Contributor), was published in 2008. Obviously, I didn’t read it right away. That’s because I was afr... (read more)

The discussion questions provided on the book mark were hard to get going. The pages referencing the changes in library operations received the most attention. We ended up sharing our pet losses and... (read more)

"Fun, light read"by Denise L. (see profile) 01/11/11

This was the first book we read for our new book club and it was a good one for us to read considering we were mostly strangers to each other and didn't know what everyone liked to read. It was a cute,... (read more)

"Dewey: the Small Town Library Cat"by Jean K. (see profile) 11/12/09

The book was easy to read and a little tedious and wordy at times. The story was interesting and everyone in our book club could relate to some aspects of the story, even those that don't particularly... (read more)

  "Repetitive"by Shana M. (see profile) 11/11/09

While Dewey's story is interesting, and at times sweet, this book was repetitive and quite boring in places. I wouldn't recommend! Definitely a 'FLUFF' book!! And I'm not referring to the cat!
